The Cayman Islands is in the northeast trade wind belt of the Caribbean and enjoys a stable climate. Cool winter nights and hot summer days are the year-round norm, influenced only occasionally by winter storms known as Nor'westers, or, a tropical storm or hurricane threat every few years. Summer humidity can be uncomfortable, but the cool sea breezes at night usually bring relief.

Cayman Islands Temperatures
January and February are the coolest months with daytime high's in the upper 70's to low 80's and nighttime low's in the mid 60's to low 70's. Summer temperatures peak in July and August with daytime highs in the upper 80's to low 90's and nighttime low's in the low 80's. High humidity in the summer months can often make the days and nights feel hotter. On January 19th, 2000, we registered a low temperature of 58°F, with no wind.

10-day Weather Forecast for the Cayman Islands

Average Rainfall in the Cayman Islands
Rainfall is seasonal, from May to November, with May/June and September/October typically being the wettest months. The driest months are usually February and March. Rainfall is generally the result of either tropical thunderstorms which develop in the summer months, or, localised rain resulting from the evaporation of water in the central mangroves of the main island. "Tropical Waves" drift through the Caribbean in the summer months, often depositing large amounts of rainfall before they dissipate. On occasion they organize to form tropical storms or even hurricanes. Localised rainfall usually results when the summer heat causes evaporation of water in the central mangrove wetlands and rain clouds are formed. These clouds generally drift to the west, depositing rain on the western side of the island. The wettest day on record is November 30, 1993 with 7.8 inches. Although unconfirmed, it is said that a hurricane in 1909 dumped an estimated 12 inches of rain in a 24 hour period.

Cayman Islands Hurricanes
The Cayman Islands has had quite a few encounters with storms over the past two centuries of recorded history. Although the hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th, the months of September, October and November are typically the most active for our area, the southwest Caribbean. This is the period when storms tend to form in the southern Caribbean and move north, into or close to our area. Visitors to the islands need not worry about being trapped during a hurricane as evacuation plans are in place and have worked well in the past.
Major hurricanes that directly impacted the Cayman Islands in recent years were:
  • Gilbert - September 1988
  • Mitch - October of 1998
  • Michelle - November 2001
  • Ivan - September 2004

Cayman Islands Winter Storms
Occasional cold fronts pass through the islands in the winter months, the remnants of more intense winter weather moving south through the southeast US and northwest Caribbean. If strong enough, the resulting local winter storms known as Nor'westers may be accompanied by extremely rough seas which can cause coastline damage and beach erosion.

Cayman Islands Tides
Grand Cayman's tide table is based on that of Galveston, Texas, minus 8 hours 1 minute. Spring tides range from 10 to 12 inches and autumn/fall tides from 15 to 20 inches.

I am planning our HoneyMoon for the 1st/2nd week in June 2012...hoping to find a nice place that is a-little secluded. Maybe an intimate dinner location, beachside would be Awesome!!! Any suggestions???
We are thinking the weather should be nice, a bit warm but early June should still be an okay month, yes? We're looking to do a bit of fishing, snorkling, kayaking, hiking, etc....We are soo excited to come and stay on the island; we have been there twice (day visits) off the cruise ships.
Would any All-Inclusives be suggested????

I would like to hear some price quotes for 5 night stay. I want to hear from someone who has been many times to the island. My wife and I are looking for a hotel with people in the over 50 age group. We are interested in a room rate of 180 to 200 dollars a nite. Also would like to know if you can buy food from a market there and prepare it in your rm kitchnete? These may sound like stupid question's, but it can save you a lot on meals. We believe in useing the saved money for shopping!:-)
Please let me hear from some couple in the 55+ age group. My wife and i would appreciate it :-)
Thank you!

I know it says that September/Octob er/November are typically the most active months for hurricane season, but what is the weather generally like for late Sept/ early October? Does it rain pretty much at day or night or both? We are looking into honeymoon destinations, and I really want to go to Cayman, but I am really worried about having to evacuate in the middle of our stay. Any suggestions?

The water is cooler in the winter (closer to 79º to 82º) and warmer in the summer (83º to 86º). To many people it is comfortable year round. To those of us who live in this warm climate, the winter water requires a light diving suit to feel good for a long period underwater. Snorkelers should be fine year round, unless you chill easily like I do. Then just rent a shorty wetsuit.

We are going to Grand Cayman Island at the end of August. We would have liked to go earlier in August, but scheduling other events got in the way.
Is thw chance of a hurricane greater in late August than earlier in the summer?

We stayed last year across the highway from the Ritz at Sunshine Suites and spent $200 to $300 less a night. All beaches are open to everyone, so we used the beach in front of the Ritz no problem. It even includes a really good breakfast buffet and kitchenettes in the rooms.

We stayed at the Marriott and really enjoyed it. Most everything is within walking distance. Try Cimboco for breakfast & dinner - great food and prices!

Rainy Season starts in May. So, in theory, you could get rain at any point during the day. However, my experience is that June is typically a good month - mostly sun, with occassional showers. Months to avoid for fear of lots of rain - Sept, Oct, Nov.
All the best.

Our daughter is marrying a Caymanian on June 25th, 2011. There is no time of day that it typically rains in Cayman. We have been warned that it can be warm and rain is a possiblity any time of day. Hope this helps. Good luck and Congratulations !

Also going in November, 2011 (on the Carnival Valor) - curious about weather this year.
Should we plan on bringing rain gear, or will we be okay without it?

We don't get as hot or cold as so. FL Our daytime hi vs night lo spans only a few deg F. w/ jul/aug in upper 80s and jan/feb lower 70s. Very little rain 1st qtr of ea yr. Most rain in Oct. Storms betw jun-nov. No heating systems even at Ritz as a dip below room temp is rare. On our coldest several days nearing 70deg, people bundle up in sweaters. In sum, we don't get as hot as Boston or as cold as Miami and not as humid as New Orleans.

The weather doesn't fluctuate so much, so the winters are a lot warmer than in Florida. Also nights are warmer than in Florida and there is no cold wind that may come from the north.

Hello,

I have the opportunity to visit Grand Cayman for the first time from October 27 to November 1. When it rains during rainy season, is it likely to rain all day or is it more likely that there will just be a heavy afternoon shower for an hour or two?

Thank you,
Greg
